  • Judge Rules in Favor of Duke over Streetcar Costs

    A Hamilton County judge ruled this morning that the City of Cincinnati cannot force Duke Energy to pay the $15 million price tag of moving underground utilities beneath the streetcar route. Thankfully the city set aside that amount after the sale of the Blue Ash Airport.

  • NAACP Picks Cincinnati for 2016 Convention

    The NAACP has officially picked Cincinnati for its 2016 convention which should bring close to 10,000 people to the city. This will mark the second time in less than ten years that the NAACP has chosen Cincinnati to host the convention. The previous time was in 2008. The convention is scheduled for July 9-12 at the Duke Energy Convention Center.

  • Rookwood Pottery Owner Plots Grammer’s Expansion

    The owner of Rookwood Property is planning a $75 million investment in Over-the-Rhine centered around the historic Grammer’s German restaurant at Walnut and Liberty streets. Martin Wade bought Grammer’s from Jim Tarbell in 2007 and has been steadily snatching up nearby property. Wade’s three-part plan is for 100 apartments, 40,000 square feet of offices and a row townhomes. Twenty-one initial apartments set to open in June 2015 are part of the project’s first phase.

  • Portman Decides Not to Run for President in 2016

    You can cross Senator Rob Portman’s name off the list as a 2016 presidential candidate. The Republican Portman announced that he will run for a second term in the U.S. Senate in 2016 instead. The 59-year-old Portman first won election to the Senate by defeating Democrat Lee Fisher for George Voinovich’s vacant seat.

    Cincinnatians can boast that they are the highest paid workers in Ohio, according to a survey done by NerdWallet. The survey puts Cincinnati at #10 in the country with an average salary of $72,223.

  • Music Hall Needs $40 Million More for Renovations

    Music Hall needs about $40 million to complete renovations, according to Otto Budig, the philanthropist leading fundraising efforts. The task force he is leading currently has between $80 to $85 million of the $123 million total. Close to $45 million has come from private donations with another $25 million coming from federal and state tax credits. The city of Cincinnati has committed $10 million.

  • Tracie Hunter Gets Six Months at Sentencing

    Tracie Hunter was finally sentenced last week to six months in jail by Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Norbert Nadel. Hunter’s attorney’s request that Hunter remain free during her appeal process was denied. Hunter will start serving her six-month sentence December 29.

  • Hamilton County Sheriff Buys Drone

    The Hamilton County Sheriff recently purchased a drone to be used for aerial photos of crime scenes and traffic accidents. Hamilton County’s drone isn’t the first in the area, as other departments around Cincinnati have used similar drones for similar reasons. The drone is available for purchase from Amazon for $800.

  • Fifteen Cincinnati Breweries Collaborate on Stout

    Cincinnati’s fifteen licensed breweries are all collaborating on next year’s signature brew for Cincinnati Beer Week. MadTree Brewing is in charge of making BlackTart Stout, which will be start being canned December 26.

  • PromoWest Buys Bunbury and Buckle Up

    Bill Donabedian sold his rights to the Bunbury and Buckle Up music festivals to PromoWest. The Columbus-based PromoWest will handle all booking, marketing and production of the festivals going forward with Ticketmaster managing ticket sales. The 2015 Bunbury festival is slated for June 5-7.

  • Covington to Add Canoes and Kayak Rental to Former Waterfront Location

    Kayaking, canoeing and rowing could soon replace Jeff Ruby’s Waterfront on the Ohio River. The Covington City Commission votes today on an agreement with the non-profit rowing group who proposed the idea. The Waterfront restaurant was closed in 2011 after it partially broke loose from its dock and floated down the Ohio River.

    Tickets were released yesterday to the tenth annual MusicNOW festival. Acts will include a collaboration between The National and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, The Lone Bellow and more. MusicNOW was founded by Bryce Dessner, Cincinnati-native and guitarist for The National.

  • Homeless Protected Under Hate Crime Laws in Seelbach’s Proposal

    Cincinnati Councilman Chris Seelback proposed a city ordinance that would classify homeless people to groups protected by hate crime laws. Seelback’s proposal could add 180 days in jail to those who mistreat homeless people in Cincinnati.

  • Huffington Post Names Cincinnati Startup Scene as Top 8 in USA

    Cincinnati could be the next Silicon Valley. Or at least that’s what the Huffington Post thinks in its article that listed the Queen City as one of eight cities across the country that is poised to jumpstart the next round of successful startups. HuffPo noted Cincinnati’s large Fortune 500 companies and low tax base as reasons why Cincinnati could be the Midwest’s next tech hub.

  • Reds to Give Away Record Number of Bubbleheads in 2015

    The Cincinnati Reds’ marketing division is trying to boost ticket sales in 2015 by offering a record number of bobbleheads. A total of nine figurines will be given away, including Johnny Bench, Barry Larkin, Brandon Phillips and other current and former Reds players.
